The next best solution, if you can't go to Japan, is to find a Japanese neighborhood where the language is spoken a lot. If you do not have this, try spending a few weeks watching only Japanese television shows and movies (and leave the subtitles off) This is a good way to learn many new words and phrases.

Read Manga. Manga are graphic novels written in Japanese (and some are translated to other languages as well) If you want to improve your ability read and understand Japanese, this is a good method to use. You can pick up some useful knowledge of popular word usage and slang by reading the books in your native language. This can give you some insight into popular culture, which classes and lessons may not do as much. Note: be careful when you choose your manga; many of them can be quite adult in nature!

You should read out loud. Learning a language almost always depends on being able to hear the way it flows and being able to properly repeat that sound. You must get a feeling for the natural rhythm and flow of the language or you will never be taken serious by native speakers, so start reading and speaking the language out loud. Read store signs and product labels out loud. Doing the exercises in a textbook and reading the examples out loud is a good way to practice. The more you read out loud the better your pronunciation will be and the better your new language will flow when it is time to put it to use!
