The Tween Girl and Decorating
The teenage years are experimental for most girls. This is usually the time around when they want to assert their styles. Decorating the room is one of the things they will want to do as early on as they can, so be prepared. Unfortunately, it is not a one-off thing for them and they will want to change the look of their room every now and then. It can only mean one thing for you: spending and more spending.
The problem many parents face is how to decorate their daughter's room in a manner that is both age appropriate, suits their daughter's sense of style, and won't ruin their budget.
As a parent, do not be tempted to make all the decorating decisions for your daughter. Most parents wrongly assume that their teenage daughter is too young to know anything about decorating and so go buying and installing things for her. You may have noticed her love for a particular thing but that may have been puppy love and her interest could now be in something else. While most girls are awed by boys and girl toys, some are not. Do not automatically assume that your daughter will like a pink area rug in her room; she might not fancy it. Instead, involve her in all your plans and let her say what she wants, what she doesn't want and respect her wishes (if they are reasonable).
Begin with the walls. The color of the walls will determine what colors most other pieces around the room will be in. Leave the color choice entirely to your daughter. You can either tell her to choose whatever color she fancies or give her a list with some of her favorites and ask her to choose the one that delights her the most. You have to be prepared for the craziest color you've seen on a wall. You may hate the color but your girl loves it, so it stays.
Deal with the floor next. Now, it's hard to change flooring, especially if it is hard wood, concrete, tiles or carpeted. Unless you have a grand plan of demolishing the existing flooring and replacing it with something else, do not give false promises to your daughter. Let her know that the flooring is permanently set but there are ways to enhance it. Use area rugs to change the appearance of the floor and add an element of beauty. A single area rug selected well will enhance the look of the floor and add warmth to the room. Let your daughter choose the modern area rug of her liking.
Include some accessories in addition to the basics. A desk and chair for late night studying is appropriate. It will also give her a sense of responsibility. A book shelf will also be welcome. It will serve as a reminder and motivation concerning her studies.
If her room is large enough, bring in a comfortable sofa where she can curl up with friends or on her own. Make this area comfortable by adding a colorful area rug beneath.
Working with your daughter on the decoration of her room will turn out to be more fun than you imagined if you keep an open mind.
