Can I get my back yard poles included in the undergrounding on Cypress and Mesa Dr. if I don’t live on those streets?
Answer from Patrick Arceniega City of Newport Beach “My understanding of this project, was to underground the poles and wires that are in the Mesa Dr. and Cypress St. right-of-way due to the fact that they are high voltage (66kv) lines and are restricting the bridle path and sidewalks down Cypress St. and Mesa Dr. The purpose of undergrounding these lines would allow for expansion of the bridle paths down to the Back Bay.
To my knowledge, the undergrounding of utility lines along the rear of property was not the intent of this project.
Some additional points that need to be considered before any additional lines are added to the existing project:
1. City Council, and the County Board of Supervisors have already approved the project and budget as proposed. What would be the process of adding additional poles to the project scope, and requesting additional funds for construction? How would these additional poles be justified?
2. What kind of approval if any is needed to use RDA funds for additional poles on private property?
I feel that the current poles are all predominantly in the same type of category as far as being in the public row, or serving the circuit that runs along Mesa Dr. and Cypress St. “
BV: I will ask PAC to expand it’s Undergrounding Committee and look at new undergrounding projects at the Dec. PAC meeting.
