We seem to be a culture that loves to fix the word "smart" into new technology advancements and there's no shortage of tech that is just that. While these tech advancements often sound more like science fiction, they're growing every popular and there's no shortage of these types of advancements for the home. The most prominent now is smart glass- which acts like a solar light switch for the home. Instead of relying in window treatments to block light this advanced replacement window automatically controls the level of light penetration into the home.

How does Smart Glass Work

Smart glass - also referred to as switchable glass - works by actively dimming or clearing in different ways. The way the windows usher the light through is dependent on which type you install. Some types work at the flip of a switch with adjustments for the opacity.

Other smart replacement windows can operate without any manual adjustment, responding to light levels similar to the way treated sunglasses respond to sunlight. This is called photochromic technology. The benefit to the use of photochromic tech within your window replacements is that it requires no manual operation and uses no electricity.

Although it could be said to be less popular the thermo tropic replacement window is still good technology. Thermotropic windows ignore the actual light intensity and instead detect the amount of heat buildup on the glass. These replacement windows don't allow user control over the light level in the home. Thermotropic also has a tendency to allow more light through when it is colder out than photo chromatic. Photo chromatic will actually act as a solar barrier year round.

Improving Smart Glass with Suspended Particle Devices

Smart replacement windows have actually been around for a while but with new technology comes newer better designs. With advances in chemical engineering the actual switching has been improved upon. On top of switching advances the actual function of the glass has been improved through advances in suspended particle devices. SPD is a technology where a conductive glaze covers the window pane. When there is no current the molecules in the elements remain opaque but when a switch is thrown and the completed circuit is charge the particles in the elements rearrange molecularly and allow light to pass.

Liquid Crystal Replacement Windows

The same stuff that's found within the displays in your digital clocks, DVD displays and laptop screens is also put inside of replacement windows. This works similarly to SPD technology with panes remaining black and white. Add current and the liquid crystal aligns to let light pass through. If you remove the current the window panes go solid.

Why Advanced Technology for Window Replacements?

You may be asking yourself why pay for all the technology when you can just install blinds. The added electricity to operate the smart glass is usually covered by the energy savings of having the replacement windows themselves. Also traditional window coverings may block light but by absorbing the light they generate heat which is still radiated into the room. In addition window panes do not collect, trap or absorb dirt, grime, haze and particulate pollution the way cloth and other window covering materials will. Along with being a cleaner option smart replacement windows are designed to keep the heat as well as the desired amount of light out. Whether or not the windows are smart, they shout that the homeowner is.
