Queensland's Sunshine Coast encompasses a number of seaside towns to the north of Brisbane. The hinterland, behind the coastline, is mountainous. The Blackall Range is the main formation here, and the mountain towns of Maleny and Montville can be worth visiting. The northern end of the Sunshine Coast is at Cooloola, which is an excellent base from which to visit the Great Sandy National Park, including Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. They project above a flat plain, and are all that remains as the softer outer cone of the volcanoes has been eroded by wind and water.
Nearby Montville is also high up in the mountains, and has some excellent views. As well as some galleries it has many gift shops, cafes, restaurants and tea rooms. About an hours drive from Montville one can find Gympie. There is a heritage railway here, the Mary Valley Heritage Railway. This non-profit railway runs steam, diesel and railmotor tours in the scenic Mary Valley.
